Penthouse ApartmentThe penthouse apartment is located within the building at 109 Hatfield Street, Cape Town.
The design of this apartment focuses on connections. These connections are about how areas connect to one another, linking the spaces so that they do not happen in isolation. There is also an emphasis on the connections between different materials and finishes, how one element meets up with another within the space. The idea behind this concept, is that the apartment is being designed for a young couple, two different personalities with different passions. This apartment looks at their connection as a pair, bringing aspects of each of them into the space, making allocations for their hobbies and belongings. Connections within the space include shadow gaps and recesses where different elements meet. Where interior walls upstairs meet up with the curtain wall, a glass panel has been put in to emphasise this connection. In the lower level, bulk heads overlap at different levels feeding from a main feature strip that links the entrance to the kitchen. The ceiling levels start off as lowest at the entrance, and gradually get higher leading the direction of flow toward the higher section over the kitchen and then the staircase. The kitchen becomes part of the staircase as it is constructed on a raised step platform. It also becomes a vital aspect of the circulation space. The platform has a shelf that extends around to the living room, passing under the wall television unit, tying these areas together. The staircase with its vertical elements pulls the two floors together. On the second level, the bathrooms appear to be connected to the balcony with the illusion of the timber decking continuing from outside to inside. The two bedrooms are tied together through a glass panel above the bed with mirrored bulkheads butting up against either side, making the one room seem like a continuation of the next. The main bedroom has a large open dressing area that feeds into the en-suite bathroom, creating a large, open and versatile space. Minimal curtaining, adjustable shutters and roller blinds with a sheer layer, ensure that maximum accessibility to the views is achieved. Project brief:
The project brief entails the redesign of a two-level penthouse apartment in the Cape Town CBD for a young professional couple in their early 30’s with no children. The couple require a contemporary living space that is comfortable and functional. The apartment needs to have a sense of openness and a focus towards the view. The couple is not opposed to using colour, and they would appreciate natural textures and materials. They do not like “bling”. Spaces to include:
